Learning Reflection in a Discourse Approach in Reading

Today, I come to from conclusion that I learned A Discourse Approach in Reading this term, first of all I want to say a sense of my own before. I feel that this course has provided me with the skills to read more and to speak English is more accurate because the teacher teaches and the Cambridge Dictionary online definition of those terms.

Recount

To tell what happend.
In a recount we reconstruct past experience. A recount is the unfolding of a sequence of events over time. We are using language to keep the past alive and help us to interpret experience.It had three types were personal, factual, and Imaginative recount. 


Narrative

The basic purpose of narratives is to entertain, i.e. to gain and hold the reader's interest in a story. But Narratives may also seek to teach or inform, to embody the writer's reflections on experience, and - perhaps most important - to nourish and extend the reader's imagination.There are many types of Narratives. They are typically imaginary but can be factual.


Descriptive

Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. This kind of text helps us visualize and understand a topic. It also explains the characteristics of the subject or topic and uses details. In addition, descriptive adjectives help us visualize the topic.


Procedure

The purpose is to tell the reader how to do or make something. The information is presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small sequenced steps. These texts are usually written in the present tense. The most common example of a procedural text is a recipe.


Comparison and Contrast

It presents similarities(comparisons) and differences(contrasts) between two or more things,or both similarities and differences. 

Cause and Effect

Cause/Effect is used to show how the facts or concepts result due to other facts, events or concepts. Words that signal this type of text structure are Because, since, therefore, if...then, as a result of, thus, and hence. A graphic organizer may be used to represent the relationship between the causes and effects.


Definition and Classification

In textbooks, you are sure to meet unfamiliar technical words and their definitions. You will also find that writers use classification to divide general concepts into a number of different types. Identifying and understanding texts that contain definition will help me academic reading.


Exemplification 

Exemplification writing uses specific, vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea. 
Problem and Solution

Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or and attempted solution). 


What did you find easy?

-Personally, I think the easiest way is to find words even if the context does not match exactly, but they can easily define.

What did you find difficult?


-Personally, I think all the chapters are similar to the discourse markers is difficult enough to learn before they take action every time.

What did you solve the problem?

-I used to read them to understand the material, trying to find answers and underlined every time I answer to stress that we do it right. I used scanning and skimming the time to read and use the Cambridge Dictionary Online all the time meant to read that correctly.


What are your attitudes towards the  Discourse Approach in Reading?

-Personally, I think this course is very necessary in the life of a teacher to me. Because we are of course important, it will give us the knowledge to be taught to children is the future of the nation with equivalent efficacy.






Week16: Problem and Solution (Continued)

Problem and Solution (Continued)


Today was the last day of classes A Discourse Approach in Reading. Today, we were monitoring the exercises together.

Exercise 1 : Read each passage. Write the title, and the sentence explaining the main idea of the passage. Then create a problem and solution graphic organizer.

 The term “machine gun” is commonly applied to any gun that is designed to fire repeatedly and in rapid succession for as long as the trigger is held down.  During the course of warfare, the trigger of some machine guns may be held down almost continuously for hours to create suppressant fire (rounds fired not necessarily to kill an enemy, but to prevent them from attacking).  All of this firing can generate a lot of heat, which may cause the weapon to overheat and malfunction.  But this situation has been addressed in a number of ways.  For one, practically all machine guns fire from an open bolt, which allows air to cool the breach between bursts of fire.  Additionally, some machine guns have removable barrels, which allow hot barrels to be replaced.  And some advanced machine guns even have sophisticated barrel cooling systems, which maintain a functional heat level within the weapon.  As you might have concluded, a lot of brain power has gone into keeping those guns firing.

 The term "Amnesia" refers to complete or partial memory loss.  Almost all of us will experience some form of Amnesia in our lives, even if it's just a simple case of verbal amnesia, like forgetting someone's name.  Fortunately, there are things that you can do to prevent amnesia.  Here is a list of foods that you can eat to improve your memory: almonds, walnuts, bananas, honey, apples, and black pepper.  Though these foods may not reverse post-traumatic amnesia, they should improve your memory in daily life if you eat them regularly enough.

 According to the last US census, drivers 19 years old and younger represent only 5% of all
drivers, yet they are involved in more than 12% of car accidents. This shows that teen drivers are involved in more accidents than their older and wiser counterparts. Sadly, teens make up more than 8% of drivers killed in car accidents. It doesn't have to be like this. We can prevent accidents and save lives by changing the minimum driving age. By raising the minimum driving age to 21 years old, more teens will live to see their 20s. Doesn't that seem worth it? I'd rather have my teenage son or daughter moaning and groaning about the driving age then getting involved in a serious accident because he or she isn't ready to drive yet. What do you think?

Bicycles are an excellent choice when it comes to transportation. Biking is healthy and faster than walking, but it is also dangerous. Each year tens of thousands of people are killed or injured while riding a bicycle. This is because our roads are designed for motorists and not cyclists, but we can change the landscape. Each time a road is built or rebuilt, we should put in bike lanes. Clearly marked bicycle lanes will give cyclists a safer place to ride. Our cyclists deserve this little bit of consideration. In fact, their very lives are depending on it.

Finally, answer exercise 2, this unit is hard for me, so I should practice more. The important are the markers, which can help me to understand the texts. I will study about them.

Week15:Problem and Solution

Problem and Solution 

Today, I learnt to  a discourse approach in reading class. We learned about problem and solution reading.
First, we got new sheets from the teacher, and read them together. There were a short example text and a small diagram. 

Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution). The problem and solution text structure may seem like it would be easy to recognize, but it can be moderately difficult to identify because it is frequently confused with the cause and effect pattern of organization, as they both have relational structures; however, if you read the passage and look specifically for both a problem and a solution to the problem, you should find it pretty easy to distinguish from cause and effect, as cause and effect passages do not propose solutions to any negative occurrences within the passage but rather just explain why or how they happen.

Example: It seems like there has been a surge in teen pregnancies these days. Teen pregnancies make it very difficult for young mothers to pursue their dreams and meet the demands of an infant. Fortunately, most teen pregnancies can be easily prevented by using birth control; however, even birth control is not 100% effective. The most effective way to prevent teen pregnancies is abstinence, which is 100% effective.

Week 14: Exemplification

Exemplification 


Today was Tuesday but I went to the university for a discourse approach in reading class. In the morning,  we learned Exemplification.Then the teacher came. We checked our homework together. Next, the teacher taught us about the exemplification. There was a lot of markers. We read the first text, and I could do the practice because filling a diagram was easy for me.


College Students

Many college students face a number of pressures. For instance, many students have to manage a job while at the same time balancing their school work. This can be very stressful for a college student. Students also face many financial pressures. For example, numerous students have to pay for their college on their own. This gives them no other alternative but to take out student loans. Which could leave them in debt for many years. Another example of financial pressures for students is having to support a family while attending college. Supporting a family while attending college can be extremely difficult. Finally, many college students go to college students go to college in different cities and states and have to make new friends and adjust to a different atmosphere. Being a college student can be very rewarding but, there may also be a lot of pressures that need to be dealt with.

Fun things to do in Great Falls

Many enjoyable activites in this area are inexpensive or even free. One of the favorites for recreational people in Great Falls is the River's Edge Trail. It is s beautiful walk along the river that goes for miles and there are many places to stop and enjoy the view. Along the way there is also Giant Springs which is a gorgeous place to have a picnic and feed giant fish or even go fishing in the river for a while. Another favorite for the recreational type is Gibson park. It is a great place to to take children and feed ducks, play on out door equipment, or have a picnic. For people who like to skateboard, play basketball or throw horseshoes, these things are all offered just on the side of Gibson Park. If you like to play in water there when it's hot you can go to the Electric City Water Park. There is a pool to cool off in which is an inexpensive way to have fun, but another option is the Wave Rider which is a bit more expensive. People who enjoy movies Would like the Carmike Ten. It has many different theaters with a wide selection of movies. If you like to kick back, sit in the stands and watch cars race, the stock cars is the place for you. There are many ways to have fun in Great Falls without Spending a Fortune.

Next, we learned about the dangers that many people in the house, jeopardizing the safety of the child can be removed easily. For example, plants poisoned by some chemical or furniture. We need to eliminate the danger.

And the last text,I learnt "What is language?"

A language is a signaling system which operates with symbolic vocal sounds, and which is used by a group of people for the purpose of communication.

Let's look at this definition in more detail because it is language, more than
anything else, that distinguishes man from the rest of the animal world.

Other animals, it is true, communicate with one another by means of cries: for
example, many birds utter warning calls at the approach of danger; monkeys utter
different cries, such as expressions of anger, fear and pleasure. But these various
means of communication differ in important ways from human language. For instance,
animals' cries do not articulate thought s and feelings clearly. This means basically, that
they lack structure. They lack the kind of structure that enables us to divide a human
utterance into words.

We can change an utterance by replacing one word in it with another: a good
illustration of this is a soldier who can say, e.g., "tanks approaching from the north", or
but who can change one word and say "aircraft approaching from the north" or "tanks
approaching from the west"; but a bird has a single alarm cry, which means "danger!"

This is why the number of signals that an animal can make is very limited: the great
tit  is a case in point; it has about twenty different calls, whereas in human
language the number of possible utterances is infinite. It also explains why animal cries
are very general in meaning.

Definition and Classification (Continued)

Good afternoon from the morning, when the last teacher told us to read text1.



Main idea: Anthropology, the study of man is divided to two types which are Physical                               Anthropology are Cultural Anthropology.

Then wrote a diagram of it.



Next,I read text2 and highlight the discourse markers in the text, answer the questions of this text and wrote to the diagram.





The last class before a group of friends to present how to cook and drink, I feel very hungry at that time.

-Personally, I think that is a simple vocabulary. It is not too difficult

-The sequence of events of the story, at first very puzzling.

What did you solve the problem?

-I help each other a friend to help explain the story and the meaning or the main idea of the matter.


What are your attitudes towards the lesson?

-I am happy to learn this lesson and all I intend to learn to extend their knowledge further.



Week12:Definition and Classification

Definition and Classification

Hello, today is a holiday, but now must learn to compensate, but that's okay, I'm OK.








The first time time we read the sentence. Then I noticed a lot of meaning to me. Teachers pointed us to see the definition and classification markings. I just read the meaning of the classification.We skills practice1 then we circled and underlined words. I just know that "Technical specifications" It's a word we do not know. So we have to use to help the reader.



Next, we have skills 2. They are short messages with the classification definition.

We wrote a textbook diagram of each It is not difficult for me.



Finally, before going to have lunch professors told to read text1 "What is Anthropology?" And then come back to do the exercises in the afternoon.

What did you find easy?

-Definition and Classification markers are an example to see it to understand.

What did you find difficult?


-There is hardly anything that much harder because I understood this lesson well.

What did you solve the problem?

-I read it all underlined words as keywords.


What are your attitudes towards the lesson?

-Personally, I think this is very useful, although it would be hard to do, but I'm willing to learn and do all the exercises in order to understand.

Cause and Effect (Continued)


Last time we were doing the exercises and identify cause and effect, discourse markers and read the text and complete related tasks.

Today, we read, "The Effects of Stress" we find the discourse. markers and made inquiries about it.



The Effects of Stress

There is a famous expression in English: "Stop the world, I want to get off!" This expression refers to a feeling of panic, or stress, that makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. 'Stress' means pressure or tension. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems.

There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory system. It can lead to asthma. It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches and problems digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress.

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry, moody, or nervous.

Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.

It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. It affects the emotions. Untreated, it may eventually result in mental illness. Stress has a great influence on the health and well-being of our bodies, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.

Week10:Cause and Effect

Cause and Effect 


Today we begin a new chapter is "Cause and Effect" first teacher to read text and view sample diagrams showing cause and effect. Then we'll practice It is a sentence that is one of cause and effect. We circular mark on the causes and consequences underlined. I think it's a great way to remember the difference between cause and effect when we read. Next, we read some paragraphs Paragraph about the Titanic.



I can diagram and filled in correctly, because when I read the circular mark. That allows me to understand the message.
I think this is a difficult lesson. Perhaps we confuse what is the cause? This is the impact? But we can use to help understand for textbooks. It is not necessary to know all of the words in texts. But we can guess.

Before time out, my friend offered to do several groups. It is also a lesson from the stage, I felt hungry all the classmates as their menu.

    The first teacher walked into the classroom, and she asked us how about our homes. We told her how it's done Then she explained it, and we check the answers together. I understand them They are about hurricanes comparison between Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina.

I was having all the answers, because they are easy for me. Next we read, "Men and women:


they speak the same language?" It is the view of the American Sociological Deborah Tannen's message tells us that men and women have difficulties in communication due. they raise different. Then the teacher to answer questions about this.

I agree with the view Tannen's because I'm a woman and I think women like to tell a story about someone other than her story. In addition, I look at myself when I talk to people, I like to tell about the stupid things that I've done because I want them to have fun. On the other hand, I see many people would like to say something that makes them seem to have confidence in yourself.
